Not only are shampoo and conditioner made from synthetic chemicals which are hazardous to your health and the environment; they have a high pH which is damaging to your hair cuticle.
Your hair cuticle is a protective layer of overlapping scales tightly wrapped around your hair shaft. These scales seal the inner hair shaft preventing loss of nutrients. The quality of your hair cuticle determines the degree of smoothness and shine in your hair.
High pH surfactants cause these scales to open out (see this picture of damaged hair), exposing the hair shaft to the chemicals. This weakens the hair shaft, strips it of its natural oils and leaves it dull and frizzy. If you've ever used Shampoo on its own you've experienced dull frizzy knotty hair - not nice!
Conditioner does NOT solve the problem, it merely HIDES it by coating the hair with yet more chemicals like synthetic pro-vitamin B5 that attempt to create a substitute for a naturally smooth hair cuticle.
